About Bivins Village

Bivins Village is an independent living facility for low income seniors. Bivins Village is located on approximately 8 acres that are currently part of a larger 18-acre tract of land owned by the Mary E. Bivins Foundation. Bivins Village is comprised of a grouping of 10 buildings consisting of eight single-story four-plexes and one two-story apartment style building and one three-story winged building that encompasses 88 one-bedroom/one-bath apartment units for elderly residents, as well as community areas. The buildings are situated with its two wings opening up to face a similarly designed two-story winged building to create a courtyard between the two buildings. Bedrooms are buffered from traffic areas with windows facing outward as well as into the courtyard area.

Bivins Village apartments are 540 square feet and include a living area, kitchen with electric appliances, one bedroom with a walk-in closet, and a large bathroom. All units are handicap accessible. Bivins Village offers an on-site laundry facility and a beauty salon. A security guard is on campus between the hours of 10:00pm and 6:00am. Interior design of the units provides usable spaces with individual areas for living, eating, sleeping and cooking. Each bathroom includes a full-height linen closet and ventilating wire shelves.

“Aging in Place” Philosophy

Bivins Village has been designed with the recognition that, although in the early years, it will serve a more independent elderly population – these persons will become frailer as time advances. Accordingly the units are equipped with grab bars and non-slip floor surfaces, along with other design elements, which facilitate individual safety.

The apartment units are also sized such that there is sufficient space for services delivered in the home such as assistance with bathing, meal preparation, medication administration and similar types of supportive assistance. The common areas also address these considerations by minimizing walking distances within the building and providing multiple resting areas (such as alcove searing) which are appropriately furnished and accessible.

Activities and Services

Bivins Village offers an assortment of activities and services for our residents. They include: cards, bingo, birthday and holiday parties, potluck dinners, wellness checks, and educational presentations. Amarillo National Bank is on the Bivins Village campus twice a month to provide banking services to residents.

Community Areas

The Community Room is intended to provide various opportunities for social interaction and recreation by the residents, including the following programmed spaces:

Community Room with Party Kitchen: This area is utilized by the residents for a variety of social, education and recreational activities, including “covered dish” suppers, birthday parties, exercise classes, arts & crafts, etc. It is sized so that it may, in later years, accommodate congregate meals.

Entry Lobby/Lounge: The building has an entrance lobby/lounge area which supports seating for 6 to 8 residents. This area can be used for conversation, as a waiting area for transportation services, as a reception area for visitors, and other similar functions. The lobby/lounge area is adjacent to management offices, mailbox alcove and provides access to other community building facilities.

TV/Lounge: The building includes a TV lounge area, suitable for smaller gatherings and activities such as TV viewing, cards, and so forth.

Laundry Facilities: A central laundry facility, equipped with coin-operated washers & dryers, is available for the residents’ use. The room has a folding area and seating.
